- Before the 26th Amendment was ratified, Americans voted at age 21.
- However, during the Vietnam War, men were being drafted from the age of 18 and yet they didn't have the right to vote, so Congress passed the Voting Rights Act that lowered the voting age for all elections at the federal, state and local level to 18.
- It was passed by Congress on March 23, 1971, and ratified on July 1, 1971.
